How did you started with Kiteboarding?

What is it that attracts so many people to learn this sport?  Is it the sensation of flying or to be independent expressing yourself on the water?

I think we need to go back in time.  We all love to be on the water. It can be surfing, windsurfing etc.. but…. kite surfing is a different animal.  We can go cruising or ‘being shot like a rocket into the air’ and we can extend the surfing part in the waves without paddling into it.

Kiteboard student in Indonesia

Kiting is so diverse and is one of the biggest and fastest growing sports in the world.

I started kiteboarding 2007 when I saw an amazing colourful scene in the sky at Cabarete in the Dominican Republic and I wanted to be a part of it.  I took lessons at Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding because they were professional, approachable and very helpful.  I wanted to learn in safe conditions and liked that their instructors were all IKO qualified.  I since worked at Laurel’s school and learned a huge amount of knowledge that has helped me grow as an instructor and now an owner of my own school in Indonesia.

It is great to see new students with their huge smiles when they make the first meters.

You know that they are going to be ‘hooked’ for life!

How did you start?  And why did you start kiteboarding?  What has it done for you since that magical moment that the power of the kite took you out of the water?
